South Poll is a breed that was created by Teddy Gentry in the 1990's. He blended Hereford, Senepol, Barzona, and Red Angus to come up with a breed that would flourish in a southern climate, and be grass-efficient. The emphasis was on Fertility, Longevity, and a very Calm Disposition. It needed to have a moderate frame (1000 to 1,100 lbs.). It must be Heat Tolerant, and slick-haired adapted. It had to have good maternal instincts, and great udders with moderate milking ability. South Polls are easy fleshing due to their moderate frame and efficient feed utilization ability. They thrive on a grass-based diet, reducing the need for supplemental feed. They maintain condition without excessive inputs, making them valuable in grazing systems. Carcass data also confirms tenderness. South Polls minimize the need for supplemental feed, making them very cost effective, and environmentally friendly..... The perfect cow to meet all the grass fed requirements.
